Ya Pip, I think peeps all the time is a good idea, we still have to be smart and not get complacent or let our gaurd down. We just had a former patroller die here skiing "side country" by him self on Aspen Mountain. He left behind 2 beautiful young girls and their mother.
... everyone lets be safe this winter, there is no reason for another one of us to die. your friends can't handle it any more.

Stephen Frears and Mike Leigh head up the British contingent at 63rd Cannes film festival Mike Leigh, the Salford-born doyen of English cinema at its grittiest, will return to the red carpet of the Croisette next month as the only British director in competition for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes film festival. Another Year, a comedy drama starring Imelda Staunton, Jim Broadbent and Lesley Manville, will be making its debut alongside 15 other works whose names were unveiled today by the organisers in Paris. Also flying the flag for Britain will be Stephen Frears, whose adaptation of Posy Simmonds's Guardian comic strip Tamara Drewe is to be screened out of competition along with films by Woody Allen and Oliver Stone. Ridley Scott's action-packed blockbuster Robin Hood will kick off the 63rd edition of the festival. Speaking amid the gilt mirrors and marble walls of Paris's Grand hotel, festival chief Thierry Frémaux told the world's media that this year's selection process had...

Don't give up. Tam might be onto something. Quilting can be accomplished with only basic sewing skills, and the bonus - no zippers, buttonholes, and what ever size it ends up to be is the right size. For something. If it's too small to keep more than your knees warm, it's art for the wall.
Bre has good advice too. you are an intelligent woman who can read and follow a pattern. Go slow and enjoy the process.

I don't know of any actual goals I had for this past year except getting out of our tiny 600 square ft. apartment and getting a house. That happened (thankfully!) as well as beginning the work on the basement (which now has all the walls up for each of the separate rooms). I'm hoping this year we'll get to redo the kitchen and I'll have a dishwasher
I have some writing goals for this year--mostly that my book is edited and researched to the point that I can start the querying process.

Hey Ann looks like exciting developments are afoot! And you have a birds eye view. It would be great to have a gallery on the doorstep. I take it the 'graffiti' has been obliterated? I love Banksy's art! I wrote an essay about artists who went against the conventional art machine and he was one of the artists featured. That's all changed though now as he has become a commodity - there is always a danger when this happens of the artist becoming a pastiche. Hope you get your doorstep gallery!

Affresh Review: Keep Your Stainless Steel Appliances Clean
July 31st, 2011 at 7:07 am
Well, it's perhaps a little misleading, given the service station sits back from the street edge and isn't normally perceived as such a "foreground" element--but it does point to the potential of that service station now that over 300 people will be living across the street. Dystopos is right it could make a very cool outdoor cafe.
And I'll also agree with Dystopos that while Cityville overall is filling a large gap, bringing ground floor retail, etc.--it's disappointing the 21st Street elevation appears to have no retail at all, just first floor apartments.

April 27th, 2011 will go down as the deadliest tornado day in well over half a century. Hundreds of twisters are touching down all over parts of Mississippi and Alabama known to chasers as "Dixie Alley". There are multiple confirmed EF-5 tornadoes, the most powerful classification. Teams Dominator, TWISTEX and TIV are all in Dixie Alley and on the hunt, with front row seats to some of the day's most breathtaking storms. Acting as storm spotters, they're reporting the tornadoes and attempting to get warnings out. But when a violent twister tracks toward the heart of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, all three teams are faced with death and destruction on an unimaginable scale.

shopuptown.ca/#/flythrough
This is been built to LEED gold standards. It includes 800,000 sq.ft. of retail shopping around a outdoor courtyard. It also has 200,000 sq.ft. of class A office space, 3000 parking stalls and 500 living units.
Notice the lack of towers. Also notice the green roofs, and the road running through it.
This should give you an idea of what is possible in mall design. I don't expect First Capital to come close to producing something of this quality for Port Place Mall, but I do think that the city ought to be arguing for as close an approximation of this as possible. We might not reach this, but it is the direction we should be going in.
For those of you who think that Port Place is just wonderful as is, the flythrough might give your weak imaginations a glimmer of what it could be.
I was reading in the paper this morning a letter from someone trying to wax poetic about this mall. The writer seriously suggested that the building be designated a historic site. It is sad to think that someone can live a life so bereft of imagination and experience that they could consider a run-down, featureless and almost windowless box in the middle of a parking lot as something worth saving.
For those who arrive in Nanaimo from the boat basin, that mall cannot leave a good impression. It is completely uninspired, unimaginative, and an ignorant response to that site. It is very bad reflection on the people who live here.
Is the new design for the mall better than what is there now? Yes . . . by quite a bit. But that is largely because what is there now is so bad. I was as disappointed as anyone, by the residential tower and the poor way the residential component is integrated into the design, but we can still argue for those improvements. However, if we continue to argue against everything and anything, then we just come off looking like whining, ignorant hillbillies who don't deserve any consideration what-so-ever.
Stop behaving like victims, and start doing something a little more constructive with that stuff between your ears.]]>

At Evensong
At five o’clock we left the gift shop,
climbed to the Abbey’s balcony.
The antiphon was about to start.
The religious came, entered,
slowly—from all directions—sending
chanted psalms through colored panes.
Wild lilacs climbed the marble walls.
And smoke, then incense, filled the air.
Soft rays from the setting sun,
pinks and shades of
muted lavender,
drenched our cool, jacketed shoulders.
The colors stroked us, loved us.
And we loved softly back. Why
we loved even the shadows in Conyers,
where the Angel of the Hour
had simply come, dressed in blue.
Cloistered monks had broken silence,
and the poems
and the songs and the prayers
were homing pigeons
bound for home.

At community discussions, the developer states they’d rather keep the entire building residential, but doubt they’d be able to sell ground floor residential units at this corner, so they stuck ground floor retail there instead.
That tells me a great deal about what kind of space the corner of 8th and D is begging to be. That's the kind of space that's naturally made for retail - even if only the quiet kind of use like a doctor's office. It's the kind of space in a building that is just begging to be public in some way.]]>

Daniel- great to hear from you- that sounds absolutely bloody fantastic!!!! Half your luck. I would give anything to crawl and hack through the spaces you describe... that is just my cup of tea... believe you me... and when I retire in a couple of years or so I intend to do just that... God willing. So keep a space for me on your ship Daniel... it is kinetic art of the highest order!!
Cheers
