If you’ve been shopping for church furnishings, you’re in luck.
Church pews, stained glass windows, a wood podium, wall-length wooden cribs and a pool table are among the many items that will be auctioned off one week from today in a cleanup of the former Highland Heights church that sits across the street from Wichita Falls High School.
The church property, which has been owned by the Wichita Falls Independent School District since 2006, will be emptied of all its assets Oct. 16, starting at 9 a.m.
Auctioneer Eddie Waldrip, a former principal at the now-closed Bonham Elementary School, will coordinate the event.
The clean sweep is in anticipation of an upcoming demolition, according to the WFISD website, although a formal vote by WFISD board members on the demolition has yet to be approved.
The auction will include the church’s wood-paneled doors, wood shelves and cabinets, hanging canister lights, wood dividers and banisters, and two white wood powder room stalls with doors. Buyers can even purchase the wood flooring and strip the stained glass windows from the window cases, according to Janet Powell, WFISD purchasing director.
Photos of items that will be auctioned are posted on the district’s website at www.wfisd.net.
WFISD purchased the church for $175,000 when Highland Heights merged with First Christian Church and approached the district about the sale of its building that overlooks WFHS.
“It was a good purchase for the district. old High is so landlocked,” said Powell.
The master plan all along has been to demolish the church, along with a parsonage and duplex next to it. that would provide an immediate gravel parking lot for the school and clear out a sizable space that could eventually be the site of a new competition gymnasium or classrooms.
The holdup is the cost of the demolition — about $200,000 for both the tear-down and the abatement. That’s a lot of money that might be better used for other school needs, according to some board members.
They asked the school district to take bids to find the cost of the demolition, but so far, the church demo is just one of a number of priorities for the district’s extra dollars, Powell said.
“We thought we’d go ahead and do this (auction),” Powell said. “It will be one step we don’t have to do later.”
The church has been vandalized since the district has owned it, so it would be better to clean it out now before more of its contents are lost, Powell said. According to the contract of the sale, the church will get the money for the church pews, podium, pool table, sacrament table, some pictures of Jesus Christ and about 20 folding tables and chairs, and the district will get the rest.
The church had planned to ship its pews, podium and other furnishings to a Galveston church that had been destroyed by a hurricane, but the transfer was never made.
The downbeat economy may be a plus or a minus for the sale, Powell said. Bids for the demolition may be more favorable now than they would be later, especially if the company decides to salvage the church’s brick shell to resell. “We could get a better price than we anticipate,” Powell said.
Powell said she’ll sell anything anybody wants, right down to the oak flooring.
“It if doesn’t go, then it goes with the demo of the building,” she said.
She expects the auction to raise as much as $40,000 for district projects.

How did they stay together? Only just
Meg Lees wasn't the first leader to chuck a wobbly over leadership issues (ref Janet Powell, who according to wikipedia is a Green now, so I guess that happened the other way round to Lees).
It should also be noted that the Greens are still in the Don Chipp phase with regards to leadership. How they manage leadership change remains to be seen, though I can tell you the more successful you are, the more unstable it will be.

ah, you may be right. Figured it was a clean sweep, but you're probably correct.

We had these bookshelves made because we had a useless hallway and 8 gazillion books. They're just made out of drywall, painted, and are less expensive than any wood shelves. But of course they're "built-in" so we can't take them if we move. But if you have any section of wall or a niche, and you can find an out-of-work contractor or handyman (which is unfortunately easy these days), you can have your own version made!

I usually agree about chain thrift stores (esp. Goodwill which tends to have a crummy kids section and is expensive), but I LOVE Value Village. It's a national chain, but has the BEST selection of kids clothing. And they have occasional half off days. Name brand stuff - I always buy in bigger sizes too. And, they have all their kids books at one flat price - like 75cents per book - buy 4 get one free. So picture books are the same price as board books. Awesome!I've also had great luck with church and preschool rummage sales. One even has kids clothes for 40cents per piece! I found like new Hanna Andersson clothes
