BRANDON - If you run into John Barlow, chances are you're going to see a video camera slung over his shoulder.
News, documentaries, events: You name it, it is a safe bet there is some footage somewhere bearing Barlow's signature.
Over a 20-year news career that included time in the nation's capital, Barlow filmed everything from car wrecks to a reception for Mother Teresa.
Today the Brandon resident shoots depositions and medical examinations.
"I'm a contractor," he said, "but do most of my work through Sunray Legal Video (Tampa). I started out with a couple of jobs a week and now I'm busy every day. Videography saves everyone time and money.
"I like the freedom," he said. "It gives me time to hang with my boys."
In addition to the family-friendly hours, Barlow's work can be fascinating.
"You learn a lot about the medical field, and a lot about the law. Then some of the people you meet are real characters. You see all kinds."
He was born and raised in Reading, Mich., and moved to Florida when he was 16. he graduated from Barron Collier High School in Naples in 1982 and trained in electronics before being hired as an audio technician at the Naples ABC station, WEVU.
"It was a small shop, so I got to learn everything," he said. "I'd always been fascinated by the technology of creativity. I learned how to edit, how to work the camera, taking bits and pieces and creating a story."
After four years he was recruited to join ABC's start-up affiliate in West Palm Beach.
"Brand new cameras, new trucks, new everything and a whole lot of energy," he said.
Before long the young cameraman was invited to work with Mobile Video, a production company based in Washington.
"We did international stories," he said. "Filming for German, Russian, Israeli and French news stations. I worked everywhere, including the White House, Capitol Hill and the Pentagon.
The company also had a contract with the Naval Academy.
"I traveled with the football team and was able to shoot the Army-Navy game at Veterans Stadium. It was a great learning experience," he said.
Memorable episodes include telling a joke that cracked up President George H. W. Bush, folding chairs with Secretary of State James Baker after a Blair House event, interviewing author Tom Clancy at home and - most poignantly - filming a reception in honor of Mother Teresa.
"Looking back I knew it was important," Barlow said. "But from my perspective now I wish I could have taken more of it in. when Mother Teresa came into the room it was special. It was different."
In Washington, Barlow met his future wife, Margaret Barlow. They married in 1993 and moved to Fort Myers, where he worked for WBBH before landing a job with CBS, Channel 10 in Tampa, where he worked 10 years.
While he was at the Tampa station, he won the National News Press Photographers Association's Humanitarian Award in 1999 for giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation to a 5-year-old he pulled out of a swimming pool while on an assignment.
Barlow said the Brandon area has been a great place to raise two sons. It is Robbie, 15, and Alex, 13, who make him optimistic about the future.
"Watching our kids, thinking about where they're going to be; it's going to be cool to watch them grow into young men."

[...] I’ve related the early reviews for It Might Get Loud, a doc about the electric guitar playing and the prowess of masters like Jimmy Page, the Edge and Jack White (again.) Finally, the trailer is out (see above) and a recent LA Times piece had some good quotes from Davis Guggenheim, the director, who famously did An Inconvenient Truth with Al Gore. Guggenheim, who calls himself a “Behind the Music” junkie, nevertheless says his film was a “rethink” of the music documentary: They’re either about car wrecks or drug overdoses, or they’re about celebrity worship, big platitudes about how they changed American culture. We wanted to go deeper. [...]

Tour of Italy champion Ivan Basso pulled out of the Tour of the Basque Country on Wednesday due to illness, his Liquigas team announced.
"We'd rather be safe than sorry," said team manager Roberto Amadio.
"Ivan needs to get home and undergo some proper medical examinations. We don't want to risk upsetting the rest of his race calendar."
Basso came into the week-long race feeling under the weather having competed at the Tour of Catalunya in Spain and he has struggled to keep pace.

If you are interested in learning more about Mother Teresa’s teachings, I have written a book, Mother Teresa: The Case for The Cause. My book is an intensively researched book exploring the faith and morals of Mother Teresa as compared to Catholic and Christian standards. My book is also unique in that there is no book currently in print that explores the faith Mother Teresa practiced in light of the faith she professed.

Personally, I think that the state of Utah is more at fault than John Barlow. John Barlow signed the document renouncing polygamy because he would rather be with his young wives than in prison. I can't say I blame John Barlow because I wouldn't want to be in prison either. The state of Utah should have anticipated that Mr. Barlow might return to practicing polygamy before the state offered that deal.

I LOVED this show when it first started. Then last winter I had to stop watching it because EASTLINK messed up the syncing of the close-captioning and it's painful to read (captions are a good minute or so behind the actual dialogue).
This issue doesn't affect programs on ABC that are simulcasted on Canadian shows. Just those shows which are only on the ABC station, like Cougartown, Extreme Makeover, Modern Family, etc. I would have died if Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice were affected this way!
I had been in touch with the ABC station who says this would be an EASTLINK issue - haven't heard a peep from them about fixing it other than some random email that they were waiting for a part that should be in place within a week (this was last summer/fall).
Maybe YOU can get to the bottom of it for me.

French fare stays put on the UES. Last time we checked in on the Upper East Side's Le Bilboquet, the 63rd Street space was set to close, about to be taken over by the Roberto Cavalli store. But the 37-seat restaurant has been given an extension until the end of the year. "They started pushing us out; we are little guys but we don't like to be pushed,'' says manager William Leroux. "A lot of time and money was being spent with lawyers, so we came to an understanding. Hopefully, this will give us time for a transition.'' According to owner Philippe Delgrange, there are three spots — within the area of 61st to 65th Streets, between Park and Fifth Avenues — that are under consideration for the restaurant's new home. Lexroux says of the real estate search, "Without sounding snobbish, we can't cross Park Avenue." The new Bilboquet will be a bit larger, but still intimate. "For the sake of the brand, we need to evoke a few characteristics like staying somewhat small,'' Leroux says. "We want...
